New Smyrna Beach occupies a notable place in history as the site of the largest single attempt at colonial settlement in what is now the United States. Dr. Andrew Turnbull, a Scottish physician and entrepreneur, obtained a grant of land from the British Crown. In 1768 he established a colony of 1225 immigrants on the coastal plantations at New Smyrna, with a view toward the commercial production of such crops as corn, indigo, rice, hemp, and cotton. The land that the Turnbull colonists settled is located along the west bank of the Mosquito Lagoon (part of the Indian River Lagoon), opposite what is now known as the Ponce de Leon Inlet. -- Source: Wikipedia.com

Democratic Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords is resigning from Congress this week in order to concentrate on recovering from a gunshot wound to the head that she received during an attempted assassination in Tucson, Arizona a little over a year ago.
On Jan. 8, 2011, Ms. Giffords was shot by Jared Lee Loughner, a 22-year-old college dropout, at a Congress on Your Corner meet-and-greet event outside a grocery store in Tucson, Ariz. A 9-year-old girl named Christina Green and a federal judge, John Roll, were among those killed. Mr. Loughner has been charged with numerous federal counts, among them the attempted assassination of a member of Congress.Ms. Giffords thanks her supporters in this video.

According to her office, Ms. Giffords will attempt to “finish her Congress on Your Corner” event in the supermarket parking lot in Tucson where she was shot. It will be a private event that will include some of the people who attended last year. Ms. Giffords, who will officially resign later this week, will also attend President Obama’s State of the Union address on Tuesday night in the House chamber.

D- Coconut Grove Grapevine shares a few images from the chocolate festival at Fairchild Tropical Gardens and says that the Grove should have a similar event.
I went to the chocolate festival yesterday at Fairchild Tropical Gardens and between you and me, it was not much of a chocolate festival and more of a food festival. There were many food booths on the grounds and lots of food trucks. The chocolate was sort of hard to find and when found, it was for sale. There were not many samples.E- You gotta love the guy's tee shirt at The Green Parrot.
F- Eye on Miami considers the state of the economy and the lack of jobs and, most importantly, are attitudes towards those who still have one.
We all clamor for decent jobs (that every politician promises and never delivers) and at the same time we shoot our fellow workers who have decent jobs in the foot. We are being manipulated to believe cops, teachers, and other union workers are pulling in huge salaries and pensions that they don't deserve. But it is peanuts if you look at the true villains in this jobs dance. The employers are greedy, or in the case of the county - inept, and the workforce is punished and we the citizens all cheer. What dopes we are, falling prey to a big fat lie.

The treatment of this photo expresses, more or less, the coldness that has enveloped our fair city. For those of you who live in the northland, you probably wouldn't think lows in the 20s and highs in the 40s very cold, but it is freezing to us. I have never noticed this pay phone in Ocala's downtown square and I would probably not have noticed except my eye caught what appeared to be a homeless man walk across the square and make a call. The square is frequently used as a rest area for homeless people during the day.
